Panchatantra 'Lion and The Brainless Donkey' in English Story.
The Panchatantra is an ancient Indian collection of interrelated animal fables in verse and prose, arranged within a frame story. The original Sanskrit work, which some scholars believe was composed around the 3rd century BCE, is attributed to Vishnu Sharma. It is based on older oral traditions, including "animal fables that are as old as we are able to imagine".
The Panchatantra is a series of inter-woven fables, many of which involve animals exhibiting animal stereotypes. According to its own narrative, it illustrates, for the benefit of three ignorant princes, the central Hindu principles of nīti. While nīti is hard to translate, it roughly means prudent worldly conduct, or "the wise conduct of life".
Lion and The Brainless Donkey
A lion, the King of the forest he lived in, had appointed a fox as his minister. Everyday, the lion hunted and killed an animal for his food. The fox helped him in this. As a reward the fox got a share of the kill for serving his master.
The lion, one day hurt his foot whilst jumping off from a rock. He was unable to go out for hunting and had to rest so that his foot could heal.
He called the fox to him and said, "Today I cannot go out to hunt. I am, however, very hungry. Go and lure any suitable animal here so that t can kill it and eat."
The fox said to himself, " No animal will come to the lion willingly. What should I do now? If I am not able to bring anyone to the lion, he will surely use me for a meal." He kept on pondering on his problem when at last an idea struck him, well he thought, " The donkey is a stupid animal. I will try to fool him and bring him to the lion."
He went trotting along to the donkey and said, " Good day Mr. Donkey. I have been looking for you all over as I have some good news for you. The lion, The King of this forest, has decided to make you his secretary. He has asked me to take you to him."
The donkey was very pleased to hear this. So he went with the fox to the lion's den. The hungry lion sprang upon the donkey and killed him and then said to the fox, I will limp along you he river for a drink, as I have an injured foot, this may take me longer than usual. You sit here and take care that no one touches this kill."
The lion went limping away to the river. The fox waited and waited and at last and being hungry himself, he hurriedly ate the brain of the donkey. The lion had crushed the donkey's head.
The lion cane back after some time and was about to start his meal with the donkey's brain an apéritif. Finding nothing inside the donkey's crushed head; he asked the fox, "What happened? Where is the brain of this donkey?"
The fox smiled and raising his hands said, " Sir, if the donkey had brains, he would not have come here to be killed by you It is known that donkey's are brainless animals."
